Woodcut · “My Neighbour Totoro”
A black-and-white woodcut after a frame of “My Neighbour Totoro” — the figure boxed in, the knife’s white cuts reading like falling rain.
NOTES
Studio notes
Totoro’s fur is all in the queueing of the cuts: one triangular gouge, top to bottom, not a single line out of place.
I designed the patterned border myself; it looks a little like a cinema ticket.
I inked each print by hand, so the blacks differ slightly from sheet to sheet — which makes each one unique.
The joy of a print is the moment it comes off the block.
